Faculty Research Initiatives
Our faculty research portfolio extends from basic research to clinical trials. Current projects include a five-year NIH basic research grant for the development of metallic nanoparticles, as well as an NIH grant for a phase one clinical trial of a new imaging agent for identification of tumor resistance. This particular project is a strong example of our comprehensive commitment to bringing new discoveries into clinical use – the imaging agent was developed by a VCU faculty member during a fellowship at NIH; scientists at VCU developed an automated method to produce the agent; and a Massey Cancer Center grant funded the first-in-humans pilot study.
Elsewhere in the department, radiology faculty members are conducting research in a wide variety of clinical areas, including cancer treatment and diagnosis, cardiovascular disease, women’s health, trauma and obesity.
